Traditionally, Ghana has relied on extended family systems to care for the elderly, particularly in rural areas where community ties are strong. However, urbanization and modernization have disrupted this model, as more young people move to urban centers for better job opportunities, leaving fewer caregivers for elderly family members. In some cases, the elderly are left behind or are placed in retirement homes, which is a new concept in Ghana.

Key issues in elderly care include inadequate infrastructure, limited healthcare resources, and a shortage of healthcare professionals trained in geriatrics. Additionally, social attitudes towards aging often view the elderly as a burden, and there is little financial support, with only 3.7% of the elderly receiving pensions.
